The National Aged Care Data Clearinghouse (NACDC) is an independent and central repository of national aged care data. It brings together information on people receiving aged care and the organisations providing care. It largely contains administrative data from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing that is generated as a by-product of the operation of aged care programs. The NACDC is operated by the AIHW.
For more information about the NACDC, see National Aged Care Data Clearinghouse: User guide.
Scope and coverage of the NACDC
The NACDC comprises de-identified person-level data on government-funded aged care programs, including in-home aged care, residential care in aged care homes, flexible aged care programs and aged care assessments. The NACDC also includes data on aged care providers.
The NACDC contains aged care data from 1997, and this is updated annually (typically within 6 months of the end of each financial year).
The NACDC does not include data on aged care that is not subsidised by the Australian Government, such as privately funded in-home care and retirement villages.
For more information about the scope and coverage of the NACDC, including detailed table specifications, see National Aged Care Data Clearinghouse: User guide.
Accessing data from the NACDC
The NACDC does not provide public access to raw data. Instead, published data and customised analyses on request are available.
Information and statistics from the NACDC are published across the GEN Aged Care Data website. NACDC data underpin most topics, data tables, publications, dashboards, and factsheets.
For confidentialised unit record files (CURFs) and other data tables from the NACDC, see GEN data.
In addition, summary data tables from the NACDC can be requested through our data request service. We assess all sensitive data requests against legislation, privacy principles and agreements with data providers to ensure lawful disclosure. Some data requests may need a Five Safes assessment or ethical approval.
For more information about NACDC data requests, see Request customised data.
Other data sources in the NACDC
The NACDC includes other data sources that are managed and governed separately, and not typically available for customised analyses.
Information and statistics from these other data sources are published in the following topics on the GEN Aged Care Data website:
- Aged care workforce presents findings from the biennial Aged Care Provider Workforce Survey and biennial Aged Care Worker Survey.
- Pathways in aged care presents outputs from AIHW analyses of the Pathways in Aged Care (PIAC) link map.
- Quality in aged care presents quarterly data from the National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program.
- Younger people in residential aged care presents quarterly AIHW analyses of the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing's Aged Care Data Warehouse (ACDW).
